Academic Writing

This class will focus on creating several types of academic essays including narrative, comparison-contrast, cause and effect, and general literary critique. Emphasis will be placed upon developing solid critical thesis with appropriate support. Essentially a college preparatory class, students should expect to be challenged and to have their perceptive expanded. Recommended for advanced 7th graders through 12th graders.  This is an AP styled course which will prepare students for the AP exam in English Language and Composition.

Writing in Response to Literature

A course designed to teach college bound students how to effectively respond to literature through analytical writing. This class will cover many of the works with which English professors expect their freshmen students to be acquainted.  We will be reading and critically responding to the following novels: Williams Golding’s Lord of the Flies, JD Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, as well as renowned short stories by John Updike, William Faulkner, Shirley Jackson, Kurt Vonnegut, and D.H. Lawrence. This is an AP styled course which will prepare students for the AP exam in English Literature and Composition.

Science Sampler I

The MYGEMS Science Center will provide the opportunity to enroll children in a great hands-on science program that promotes diversity. Do you want your child to learn about different topics of science? If you answered ye, then enroll your little scientist in the MYGEMS Science Sampler Program where they will be able to have fun while learning about various topics in science. Form astronomy to astrobiology, biology to bioengineering, your child will engage in exploratory concepts that promote learning in a fun way. Your child will also have experiences of using scientific vocabulary, writing in science journals and learning about the multicultural contributions of science.

Chemistry

Atoms, chemical concoctions, molecules, chemical formulas and equations!  Wow!  The MYGEMS Science Center has a great program for students who want to learn chemistry in a fun yet not complicating manner. Chemistry requires patience and the MYGEMS Science Center has created a program that will encourage student success in learning about chemistry that also provides real life applications and activities to bring the information to life. This class is done in two parts:  Part I:  Information Session and Part II:  Hands-on lab activities

Explore! Art

We are happy to again offer Explore! Art Program at Growing Scholars.  Explore! Believes in teaching lifetime skills; everyone can learn how to learn to draw if given instruction!  Techniques for laying down colors, creating light and shade, simple perspective and depth, are all parts of the weekly process.  See your child’s skills develop and mature.  Remember that what you draw, you learn 8 times faster and retain 8 times longer.

Beginning Spanish

This is a class for students who did NOT start classes in September 2007.  The children will learn to read, write and speak about 400 words.  They will learn whole sentences that include nouns, adjectives, verbs and lots of basic grammar and conversation.  We use songs, puppets and an excellent text.  Mothers are invited to attend the class free of charge.
