Below is the class schedule for the Fall semester. Below that is a description of each class with contact information for the instructor. All questions about classes should be made directly to the instructor. Instructors also handle all registration.

Algebra I: This is a 2- semester tutoring class utilizing Saxon Algebra 1. Each chapter is covered and all practice problems are demonstrated on the board and explained. Student questions are encouraged and extra help is available. Lots of one on one.

Time: Mondays 10:00-11:00

American Literature:  This class will be a 12-week course in which we will review several major American authors and their most critical works; it should satisfy any requirement for an American literature class.  We will start with two American authors who laid the groundwork for the most fundamental themes and ideas which constantly recur in later works, Thomas Jefferson and Jonathan Edwards.  From these two writers, we will continue to Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, William Carlos Williams, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot and Billy Collins; the course will cover every period of American literature, even to the contemporary age.

Time: Mondays 2:00 -3:30
        Classes will be held for 12 weeks

Expository Writing:  This class will be a 12-week course that will focus on the art of composition in its various forms; it should satisfy any requirement for an upper-level composition or grammar class.  We will be concentrating specifically on learning how to develop a stable argument, to construct a strong central thesis and to articulate clearly ideas and claims.  We will study some of the basic principles of logic as developed by Aristotle in ancient Greece, as well as practice writing each of the different types of papers, such as argumentative, research, analytical and narrative; we will also learn both MLA and APA styles of formatting.

TUESDAYS
 

Jeffrey Ober, with 20+ years of experience with computers and computing; and over 10 years
experience teaching, is offering computer enrichments classes at Growing Scholars (North store)
starting this September.


Understanding Computers: This class is an introduction to computers and everything computing.
Students will be introduced to all aspects of computers and computing, from personal computers to
supercomputers; from applications on computers to printers. No prior computer experience or
knowledge is needed for this class.
Time: Tuesdays 11:00 – 11:50
September 9 to November 4
Ages: 10-16

Introduction to Windows: This class introduces the Windows operating system using Windows Vista.
Students will learn how the operating system works and how to work with the operating system,
including programs, files, and the system overall. No prior computer experience or knowledge is
needed for this class. Access to a computer with Windows Vista at home will be helpful for students.
Time: Tuesdays 12:00 – 12:50

Learning OpenOffice: This class introduces the OpenOffice suite of applications. This is a completely
free software suite that consists of a number of applications very similar to Microsoft's Office (Word,
Excel, PowerPoint, etc). Students will learn how to install and use all six parts of the OpenOffice
applications including a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software, and database. A laptop
would be helpful for this class, but not required. Students will need access to a computer and the
Internet at home to get the most out of this class.

WEDNESDAYS
British Literature:  This class will be a 12-week course in which we review some of the major authors and works from the most critical periods of English literature; it should satisfy any requirement for a class concerning English literature.  Starting with Beowulf and the works of Chaucer, we will continue to review Milton and Shakespeare for the English Renaissance, Pope and Swift from the Restoration period, several Romantic writers, and conclude with the major poets of the Victorian period as well as a novel by Thomas Hardy.  This course will survey the development of English literature in its technique and form as well as in themes in ideas.

Creative Writing:  This class will be a 12-week course in which we will explore several genres of creative writing, including poetry, short story prose and drama; it should satisfy any requirement for a fine arts class.  In learning about these different genres, we will read samples of each in order to understand exactly what the various purposes and techniques of each individual genre are, as well as compose our own works.

THURSDAYS

Beginning Spanish:  I'm looking forward to my fifth year of beginning Spanish classes at Growing Scholars.  We will learn about 500 to 800 words and phrases using a wonderful book.  I'll play the guitar and teach the children many songs in Spanish.  I'll also use puppets, games and there will be lots of take-home activities.  Mothers or other adult family members are welcome to attend all classes for free.

Time: Thursdays, 1:30-2:30
Ages: 6-13 (6 yr. olds must be able to read)
 Cost: $60 for 1st 6-week session + $40 for books & materials
        Payment must be made in advance by the last week in August
